Scoping a discount to the cart, a category or a product

By the end of this article, a discount rule is scoped to exactly the sales you want it to affect.

The three scopes

When creating or reading a discount rule, its scope is one of:

• Whole cart: applies to the entire sale total.
• One category: applies only to items from a chosen category.
• One product: applies only to a chosen product.

Set it when creating a rule

1. On Settings > Discounts, in the Add discount rule form, choose Whole cart, One category or One product from the scope dropdown.
2. If you chose One category or One product, a second dropdown appears below the form to pick which one.
3. Click Add.

Reading scope on the rules list

Each rule’s Applies to column names its scope directly, such as Whole cart, Category: Beverages, or Product: Blueberry Muffin, so you can see at a glance what a rule affects without opening it.
